Wineries in the Basque Country
Located at the foot of the southern end of the imposing Cantabria range, the small village of Samaniego is home to a winery whose essence lies primarily in the unique way it makes its wines: Remírez de Ganuza. Founded in 1989, the winery fits in with the traditional architecture of the heart of Samaniego. The water channel that runs through its large central patio feeds the different old houses clustered around it.
This represents the enormous vitality of this winery and its determination to carry on growing. It is just this kind of fusion that marks the character of the winery. The fact that it is relatively recent gives it a robust, lively attitude and above all a clear orientation towards innovation and evolution.
This is without setting aside the rich winemaking tradition that so characterises Samaniego. Each of the big old houses contains part of the different winemaking processes that set Remírez de Ganuza apart from the rest. While right from the start it has used ground-breaking techniques like the sorting table, cold rooms and barrels, today it continues to embrace advances like the bag used to extract our Trasnocho, or the machine to wash grapes in their own must.
Cutting edge and innovation bottled in 7 wines: Trasnocho, Viña Coqueta, Fincas de Ganuza, Remírez de Ganuza Blanco, Erre Punto Tinto, M.Remírez de Ganuza and finally Remírez de Ganuza. Wines that distil the essence of the winery, as they are made using grapes from vines an average of 60 years old, with malolactic fermentation and ageing always taking place in new barrels.
In fact, the vineyards are another distinctive trait of the winery. 80 hectares of high-quality tempranillo, graciano, viura and malvasia vines, in the localities of Samaniego, Leza, Elciego, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Laguardia and Ábalos. All of them are sheltered by the mountains and have the ideal habitat and microclimate for the wines they produce.
A combination that is both harmonious and robust, and comes out not only in the philosophy and essence of the winery, but also in the taste and aroma of its wines.
