Towns
Berriz is located in the historical territory of Bizkaia, within the Duranguesado region, and close to the town of Durango. The municipality's northern area is uneven and Artiezu Mountain stands out. Several tributaries coming down the Oiz Mountain, such as Magunas and Akelkorta, meet the River Ibaizabal in Berriz.
Historical heritage, mountains and hills
With regard to its historical heritage, we should mention Berriz, Lariz and Arria Towers, which become Renaissance palaces in the 16th century. Likewise, there are some noble houses in Berriz, such as Berrizbeitia, Iturriza, Isunza and Olabe de los Molino. Andiko sanctuary and the church of Santa María de Andikoa, famous for its Baroque golden altarpiece, are worth visiting.
Another example of religious architecture is the church of San Juan Evangelista, dating back to the 12th century, and Berriz's twelve hermitages. Once finished the cultural trip, we can go for a walk in the mountains and hills located to the South of the River Ibaizabal.
Berriz is divided into seven different neighbourhoods and all through the year there are different festivities, although the patron saint festival takes place between June 29th-July 2nd, consecrated to San Pedro and Santa Isabel.
