Tourism destinations

Bathed by the Bay of Biscay, Getxo is located in the historical territory of Bizkaia and belongs to the Uribe-Costa region.

The municipality consists of five neighbourhoods: Andra Mari, Algorta, Las Arenas, Neguri and Romo.

Surrounded by the Bay of Abra, the municipality offers a 10 km-landscape with cliffs, coast and beaches, which we can admire from the wonderful Punta Galea promenade. Through this promenade we can walk from Getxo to Sopela observing interesting elements such as the mill of Aixerrota or the Galea fortress (18th century).

This environment makes Getxo an ideal place for nautical sports, people can enjoy scuba diving and canoeing courses and boat trips that show the coast. Besides, the most intrepid ones have the opportunity to practice sports like climbing, rafting and many others.

Historical buildings and natural spaces

If the visitor wants to get to know the village better, he or she can follow different routes. One of them begins in the hermitage of Santa Ana, one of the oldest Neo-gothic buildings in Bizkaia. We will continue with the church of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, which contains a four-keyboard organ. The church of Andra Mari, on the other hand, presents some baroque elements typical of the 18th century. From there, we will continue to the Zugazarte walk and two of the best buildings in the town: Churruca palace and Bake-Eder mansion.

Another appealing spot in Getxo is the Bizkaia Bridge, declared World Heritage by the UNESCO, which connects the municipality with Portugalete, offering a magnificent panoramic view.

Furthermore, the pleasant Puerto Viejo (Old Port), with its narrow and typical fishers' houses, show us the importance of the fishing activity in the municipality. On the other hand, at the Getxo's leisure port we can find a wide range of services.

Likewise, we'd like to underline that natural spaces, parks and leisure places become, all through the year, ideal scenarios for many significant culture and sport activities. These areas house, among others, the International Folk, Jazz and Blues festivals, and the craftwork fair.
