Getxo

The fishing town of Getxo, located on the right bank of the Bilbao ria, is bordered by 10 kilometres of cliffs and beaches, and boasts a rich architectural heritage and thriving cultural life. The Bizkaia Bridge has become one of the unquestionable emblems of the town and indeed of the Basque Country as a whole. Designed in 1893 by Alberto Palacio, it connects the area called Las Arenas and the town of Portugalete. It was the first hanging transporter bridge in the world and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Old Port with its narrow streets and typical fishermen houses, is one of the most popular areas in Getxo (especially during the festival period), together with the marina which offers a wide range of accommodation and leisure activities. The paseo de las Grandes Villas, between the marina and the Bizkaia Bridge, houses some of the most representative buildings in the area, which reflect its rich heritage. The Paseo de Punta Galea, which joins Getxo and Sopelana, is a must for nature lovers.
