San Andrés Fair in Eibar and Azkoitia

The San Andrés Fair which is held every year in November both in Eibar as well as in Azkoitia, is the first important date in the calendar of autumn and winter fairs.

Thus, in Eibar producers from the region put their best products on display for visitors in Plaza Untzaga: vegetables, fruit, honey, cheese and bread, to name but a few. A panel of judges is responsible for making a selection of the most outstanding pieces of produce. An exhibition of poultry and livestock from the Bajo Deba region will also be held. Parades with traditional folkloric music played in the streets by groups of locals, bertsolaris (verse singers), trikitilaris (accordion players) y txistularis (txistu/fipple flute players) liven up the fair. In addition, as part of the fair various types of events are held, amongst which the Pintxos Competition stands out.

Furthermore, Azkoitia held the San Andrés fair for the first time in 1752. In its early days the event went on for more than a week. Presently, the fair, which is not competitive, is set up and takes place in the main square, and plays host to the display and sale of agricultural and artisan produce and it is the main hub of activity on St. Andrew's Day. Other activities during the day's events include a herri-kirolak (local Basque sport) festival and the idi probak, Basque stone dragging oxherd tests.
