Barinatxe Beach

Located between Biscay's towns of Sopela and Getxo, Barinatxe Beach is also known as La Salvaje (The Wild). It is a wide-open beach surrounded by beautiful cliffs that has also a nudist area. Likewise, the beach offers the opportunity to practise many sports, being surfing the most remarkable one due to the heavy swell. As its Spanish name indicates, it is a wild beach with its own sand-dune area. It has a new multi-use building with changing rooms and showers. This is where the local surf schools have their headquarters. It also has two surf clubs and like the rest of the beaches in the area there are usually a lot of bathers and surfers. As it faces northwest, the wave period is usually quite high. The beach has different peaks. The most well-known is the wave known as La Triangular, on a rocky seafloor, that is surfable with quite large waves and at all tides. It is a long right with a concentrated peak but not at all treacherous, which makes it ideal for longboards. In low tide it has a more vertical left with tube sections. In the western area of the beach is the wave called La Batidora, where lefts predominate. In the central area is La Corriente, a very technical left which becomes variable according to the state of the tide, the size of the swell and the current. In Barinatxe the seafloor is constantly changing and can give very high-quality waves. The cliffs are perfect for practising paragliding.
