Basque Museum of the History of Medicine and Science

The Basque Museum of the History of Medicine and Science began its activity in 1974 at Bilbao's Academy of Medical Sciences, when objects contributed by some doctors and academicians were collected. It is conceived as a Museum of Medicine History, but also as a Museum of Technology and Natural Science.

 

The museum boasts different rooms according to specific subjects related to the varied branches of medicine and to the most important Basque doctors: Caro Baroja, Monreal, etc. The museum's collection is currently made up of almost 8,000 catalogued apparatuses and instruments and some 7,000 books.

 

It covers a surface area of 1,520 square metres and is divided into 23 halls which exhibit materials related to the practice and study of a wide range of medical specialisations such as cardiology, ophthalmology and radiology. Other attractions include an old operating theatre, office and laboratory. , Popular Medicine and exhibitions on several medicine specialities.
