Buen Pastor Cathedral is the biggest religious building in San Sebastián occupying a prominent complex in the centre of the city together with the Koldo Mitxelena Cultural Centre and the post office.
Its 75-metre high tower rises in the shape of a needle that can be seen from almost every part of the city.
The Neo-Gothic cathedral was built by architect Manuel Echave and opened in 1897. It has a ground and symmetric plan in the shape of Latin cross and consists of three naves, transept and a presbytery. It was built in sandstone ashlars from Igeldo quarry like many of the city buildings.
The cathedral has numerous decorative elements such as stained glass windows, gargoyles, pinnacles, and so on.
