Old Town of Durango

Art & Culture

Cultural Heritage

The church of Santa María welcomes those who visit the Old Town of Durango. The sanctuary, whose wooden arcade is its most outstanding feature, is a combination of Gothic and Renaissance styles. Arandoño Tower is attached to the religious construction.

The Old Town is mainly formed by the parallel streets as follows: Barrenkale, Artekale, Goienkale and Kalebarria, which are all intersected by Zeharkale Street.

If we walk up Barrenkale Street, we will run into Lariz Tower with its unusual figures. The street leads to Santa Ana Square, made of stone, where we will enjoy the church and the gate of the same name. The Baroque-style arch is the only visible access of the former town wall and built in 1556.

If we walk down Artekale Street, we will bump into the Town Hall, a Classical building with Neapolitan influences that was built in the 16th century. The paintings on the main facade will catch our attention.

And, if we go round the church of Santa María, to the right, we will notice the Garai Palace, the hermitage of Vera Cruz -wich houses the Tourist Office and the Cross of Kurutziaga- and the Olalde Palace.
