The Virgen de la Peña hermitage, located in Faido, is regarded as one of the oldest Christian churches best preserved in Euskadi in these days. It's been declared a National Monument.
It was built in an artificial cave dating from the Middle Ages, exactly in the second stock of the Kruzia caves. The building falls into two parts: the lobby (inside a building incrusted in the rock) and the temple itself (excavated into the rock).
The entrance to the lobby is reached going through an arch. Inside, we'll find a mural representing the Stations of the Cross. Getting into the rock, we'll enter a temple built taking advantage of a former pre-Romanesque hermitage.
The altarpiece is of white rock (built in the 18th century). An image of the Virgen de la Peña, dating from the 13th-14th centuries, is kept there.
