The church of San Miguel Archangel

Located in the centre of Idiazabal, the church of San Miguel Archangel is situated in one of the most emblematic buildings in town. The Romanesque-Gothic front door was built between the 12th and 13th centuries and side engravings and geometrical signs carved in it reveal its age. Inside, beautiful groined vaults from the 17th century crown the place and the baptismal font was transferred from the hermitage of Kurutzeta. Another gem hidden in the interior is the fantastic Baroque altarpiece designed by Miguel Irazusta and built by José Antonio Iparragirre. Juan Bautista Mendizabal carried out most of the sculptures in it and the retable was rounded off in the 18th century.
