Mount San Antón, widely known as the Mouse of Getaria, goes deep into the sea and shelters the port from where Middle Age's ships departed to go whaling. That is the reason why a whale appears carved in the town's coat of arms.
The port of Getaria is still one of the most emblematic spots in town for Getaria has a great fishing tradition because it is municipality's main economic activity.
The Basque Government has invested heavily in Getaria's port, which is one of the safest shelters on the Cantabrian coast and an important coastal fishing spot. A new road access has been provided as well as docks and areas fitted out for loading and unloading facilities, and places for leisure ships. Thus, the port of Getaria is equipped with an ideal infrastructure to become both a fishing port and a marina.
This is an ideal place for a relaxing stroll while enjoying a nice landscape. Likewise, several restaurants will provide us with the best fish dishes together with Getaria's famous txakoli white wine.
