Isasi Palace (Markeskua)

Isasi Palace (Markeskua)

Markeskua is one of the most relevant civil buildings still kept in Eibar. The palace was built in the 16th century ordered by Martín López de Isasi and Domenja Orbea. As many other palaces of that age, it was built outside the medieval village, near the road leading to Ermua.

The house has rectangular plan, sober decoration and hipped roof. A semi-circular arch surrounded by voussoirs gives way to the interior. In the centre of the façade we will find the coat of arms of the Isasi family, powerful lineage whose members had relevant jobs and functions in the court.

The building was restored and, nowadays, it is the headquarters of the Udako Euskal Unibertsitatea (Basque Summer University, UEU), an academic institution offering high-level studies, doctoral studies... However, there are activities all year round, not just in summer.
