Terreros tower was built by Juan Galindez de Terreros in the 15th Century. It is a 15-metre high vertical building with square plan.
The thick walls, 1.20-metre width, were built in checker work. The ground floor was used as stables and storeroom and, sometimes, as a prison. The entrance was located under a pointed arch. The first floor was a residence and access was gained through an outer stone staircase. This floor is very high, almost half the tower¿s height, which originated lighting and ventilation problems. They opened big spaces to solve the problems. The second floor was the living room. The upper plan was a cabin, unusual in that period¿s towers. Moreover, it had some openings in order to defend the tower against assailants. The tower has undergone little restoration, the only one being a country house attached to it. The whole outer structure has endured all over centuries, except the roof.
Terreros Tower is part of the monumental compound of La Herrera, with Urrutia palace and the hermitage of San Antonio de La Mella.
