The first data on the church of Santa María la Real date back to the 13th Century but the present structure dates back to the 16th Century.
Years later, in 1632, two lateral naves (those hosting the chapels) were added. The tower is even newer, built at the end of the 17th Century by Juan de Aranzeta, from Elgeta. Finally, the altarpiece was designed by Ventura Rodríguez and has Neoclassical style. However, the church's main feature is the portico, built in 1666. It is one of the best examples of Basque popular art, a wooden carving combining Renaissance and Baroque elements that captivates the visitor.
It is in perfect condition after the restoration made in the 80s.
