Fort of San Marcos

Nestled on the hillside that bears its name, the Fort of San Marcos is one of the most emblematic places in Errenteria. As well as being a splendid vantage point from where we can marvel at the spectacular views of the town, it's worth noting that its pillars are home to a long history. It was built in 1888 with the purpose of protecting San Sebastián from the attacks of the French troops, both on land and sea. Later, after the Civil War, the fort served as a prison.

Since 1970, the Army used it to carry our maneuvers, until in 1992 it was acquired by Errenteria Town Council. One year later, work began on restoration. Currently, as well as being a vantage point par excellence in Oarsoaldea, a museum has also been set up where military activity has been recreated and several replicas have been housed there: machine guns, cannons, soldiers, artillery, etc.

In addition to all the above, there are two information points known as Cicerone. Using this system involves dialling a telephone number and we will be provided with all the information about the place we are visiting. Once you make the call, the relevant tourist office will send the calendar of events scheduled for that day to the user's mobile phone. Also, at the entrance to the fort three is a hall which has been fitted out to accommodate the reception area and San Marko Tourist Information Point, as well as a scale model so visitors can get an overview of the Oarsoaldea Region.

Guided tours are also offered during high season. On 25th April the feast of San Marcos is celebrated and holds a very special meaning for the inhabitants of the Oarsoaldea region and towns such as Irun.
