Mater Boat Museum

Mater Boat Museum is the last great Basque tuna boat made of out of wood. Built in 1990 by the Etxegoiens, a family of fishermen, the Mater fished anchovies, mackerel, sardines and bonito for 13 years. The decision to turn it into a museum to disseminate the region´s maritime legacy was an initiative of the Itsas Gela association.

Nowadays, it is based in Pasaia and has become real living maritime heritage. It is a peculiar EcoActive Boat with two aims: raise awareness on sustainability of the traditional Basque fishing arts and teaching people how to take care of the marine environment.

Mater offers a wide-ranging programme of activities with a single goal: find out, love and conserve Pasaia-Jaizkibel-Ulia’s maritime, natural and cultural environment.
