Vitoria-Gasteiz gains international certification as a destination for sustainable tourism
Biosphere Responsible Tourism is the first certificate of this kind awarded to a Basque municipality

The Responsible Tourism Institute made this award in recognition of its potential as an urban model of sustainability. Vitoria-Gasteiz had already been chosen as European Green Capital in 2012 and this new recognition helps to raise the city’s profile on the international tourist market, especially in terms of green and sustainable tourism. The RTI considered six factors: sustainable management, economic and social development, conservation and improvement of cultural heritage, environmental conservation, quality and safety and involvement of visitors. The strong points it identified include the municipality’s different plans, commitments and initiatives in the struggle against climate change, as well as the network of city parks that form the Green Belt and the importance of the Salburua wetlands in protecting biodiversity.
