The origins of Vitoria-Gasteiz in 3D

The Fundación Catedral Santa María has created a film showing what the original settlement was like a thousand years ago.

The Fundación Catedral de Santa María has launched “The origins of Vitoria-Gasteiz”, a film that recreates the origins of the city between the 9th and 12th centuries in 3D.  The project was carried out in cooperation with the University of the Basque Country and the University of Burgos.

Thanks to information gleaned from excavations that have been going on for years in the cathedral, it has been possible to establish facts relevant to the project and begin to trace the origins of the capital of Álava province. All this is based on new technologies for digital reconstruction in three dimensions applied to heritage and education.

The film faithfully recreates the primitive settlement at Vitoria-Gasteiz in the 9th century, then an important centre producing iron and significant in trade and industry by the standards of the time. The most radical change comes at the end of the film: at the beginning of the 12th century Gasteiz is surrounded by strong walls, so boosting its economy.

The project, funded by the Álava provincial authority, has been produced in five languages (Spanish, Basque, English, French and German) and is shown as part of the tour of the cathedral.
