Restrictions lifted on access to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe after improvement work on the steps

While work was going on, access was only allowed between 10am and 8pm, and flows going up and down from the chapel were supervised.

After completing renovation work on the steps up to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, the island is once again open to the public without restrictions. However, it is still advisable to get a free entrance ticket for San Juan de Gaztelugatxe to ensure a visit at the busiest times, when access is supervised.

Work has been done on the bridge and the stairs leading up to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, the aim being to reinforce unstable parts of the rocks spotted in the slope beside this part of the site.

The work was carried out, as planned, between 10th May and 8th June, in between Easter Week and the beginning of the summer season, the two busiest times for visitors to the island.

Improvements in access by road

Also, the Bizkaia provincial authority has passed a plan to improve access by road from Urizarreta (Eneperi) by providing a centre lane at the junction.
