The Ribera Market (Riverside Market), located next to the ría de Bilbao in the Old Town, is one of the most important trade centres in Bilbao and Biscay. The San Antón Bridge is nearby the Riverside Market, whose surroundings have become an important economic centre.
The history of this market goes back to the 14th century, though the building we know today was opened in 1929. Since then it has been refurbished several times; in 1984 it had to be extensively rebuilt following the flood of 1983.
In 1990 Guinness recognized Riverside market as the most complete one, being the biggest roofed market in Europe.
The ground floor is devoted to fish products; at the first floor, there are all the stalls selling meat; and finally, the second floor is the place for fruit and vegetables.
In addition, La Ribera Market completes its gastronomic offer with restaurants, bars and gastrobars, in which ham, seafood and gildas can be tasted or the best live jazz can be enjoyed.
