Beaches
Ereaga Beach is located in Biscay's town of Getxo, between the old port of Algorta and the Arriluze breakwater.
With more than 800 metres of fine sand, this wonderful beach is very well equipped for the summer season.
On the other hand, many sports are practiced in Ereaga: surfing, canoeing, volleyball and sailing among others. But, it is not in doubt that the beach is well known for its beach soccer tournaments.
It is an urban beach which has mainly lefts, and is ideal for bodyboarding. It has short, tubular waves. It needs strong seas, which is why it does not often have waves. Surfable up to 6 ft. It is worth noting that it is sheltered from the northwest wind, so it is a very valid alternative when the weather conditions are not favourable on open beaches and there is heavy sea. The other spot on this beach is nicknamed Jeffrey's by the locals: a quality right-hander that breaks on the inside of the Bilbao estuary, in front of Puerto Viejo de Algorta [the Algorta Old Port]. It needs big swells to begin breaking and it does so only a few times during the year, but when conditions are good, it produces long waves surfable up to 9 ft in height. Access is complicated as this has to be done across rocky terrain or paddling over a long distance.
