Basque Coast
Beaches
The length of Zarautz Beach is its most outstanding feature, not in vain the golden sandy beach extends over 2,5 kilometres. It is the largest beach in Gipuzkoa.
With its bright awnings, the beach is equipped with bars, coffee shops and restaurants on the promenade. It is open to the sea and Zarautz has always been a surfing destination, since the swell is favourable to practise water sports. Therefore, many surf lovers drop by for a day taking waves. Besides, it is worth mentioning that Zarautz is one of the best breeding grounds for surfers in Europe.
It is the longest beach on the Basque Coast and has multiple breaks. It is ideal for complete beginners and has more than 5 schools, with one of the most active surf clubs on the coast. It holds several competitions during the year. Going from west to east, there are the peaks in the port area (which breaks when the waves are more than 6 ft.) , then we have and Argiñano, the true epicentres of the beach, and finally El Canal, slightly further away at the eastern tip which provides quality sessions.
The surfing atmosphere in Zarautz is incredible, especially in the Argiñano area and the centre of the village.
