All cultures, however ancient, have had some form of music. Music is something that has always existed in human beings' everyday life, and it is believed to have emerged from the need to express feelings and experiences.

Music offers us benefits like well-being, pleasure, happiness, positivity and concentration. It also boosts out self-esteem and helps us to regulate our feelings. Would you like to find out about some of our music festivals? We recommend some that are to be held in the coming months.

1. Azkena Rock Festival

This festival has been held every year since 2002 in the capital of the Basque Country, a place for thousands of music fans to come together to the sounds of rock. It's one of the biggest in Spain, and specialises in groups from the underground scene.

Over three days, this big event in Vitoria-Gasteiz brings famous, chart-topping bands to the stage, legendary groups for audiences to enjoy their favourite music.  This year it will be held on 20th, 21st and 22nd June. 2. Bilbao BBK Live

Held in Bilbao since 2006, BBK Live is one of the biggest festivals in Spain, and an event that has won many awards. In its early days it was known for bringing rock and pop bands, but today it features many other genres.

It is held on the Campas de Kobetamendi, an extensive green space that has hosted some 115,000 people over three days in recent years. This is a park filled with paths and a small wood which plays a big part in the festival. Known as Basoa (Basque for forest), it’s the venue for a great programme of electronic music.

It takes place from Thursday to Saturday, from 11th to 8th July. Take a look at this year's bill on our website!  https://tourism.euskadi.eus/en/agenda/bilbao-bbk-live-festival/aa30-12375/en/

4. Jazz festivals

July smells of jazz in the Basque Country

July smells of jazz in the Basque Country, with festivals in Getxo, Vitoria-Gasteiz and San Sebastián that attract stars and rising talents in this musical genre year after year.

Discover three events that you simply must put in your diary:

Getxo Jazz:

The landmark jazz festival in Getxo is held in Muxikaberri, the art, culture and congress centre in this coastal town. One of the aims of this event is to discover new artists and showcase the best of this genre for its audiences.

It has been held since 1975 and at first it took place in the old harbour at Algorta, run on a shoestring. But it gradually grew, to the point where giants of world jazz are to be featured at this year's festival.

Want to see how it has developed? Then add these dates to your diary: we look forward to seeing you in Getxo from 3th to 7th July!   https://tourism.euskadi.eus/en/calendar-events/getxo-jazz/aa30-evento/en/

Vitoria-Gasteiz jazz festival:

The international jazz festival in Vitoria-Gasteiz is one of the top events on the international circuit. Set up in 1977 by a group known as Jazzteiz, since then it has grown while remaining true to its essence.

The festival lasts a week and jazz concerts are held in different settings all over the city, both in the street and at the official venues. It's fair to say this is one of the best festivals of its kind in Europe. From 15th to 20th July you have the perfect excuse to improvise a break in Vitoria-Gasteiz. https://tourism.euskadi.eus/en/agenda/vitoria-gasteiz-jazz-festival/aa30-12375/en/

Donostia Jazzaldia:

This is the oldest festival in Spain and one of the longest-running anywhere in Europe. This year sees its 58th edition and  the programme is now out. All the big names in jazz have been to San Sebastián!

There will be different stages set up around the city, one of them next to the Kursaal, with the chance to enjoy stunning views of La Zurriola beach while the live music is playing.  Come along to our star-studded city between 23th and 28th July - a great option for this summer! https://tourism.euskadi.eus/en/agenda/donostia-jazzaldia/aa30-evento/en/

Apart from those we describe in this post, there are a wide variety of events, such as the MAZ festival in Basauri, the Musical Fortnight in San Sebastian or Getxo Folk, a vast range covering musical genres of all kinds. So what does music do for you? Find out at our festivals - this summer has a beat of its own!
