October is a special month in Gernika-Lumo. Numerous fairs of different nature fill the streets of this town of Bizkaia, although, without doubt, the most important events are the fairs held on the first and the last Mondays of October. Cod Day is held on the first Saturday. The inhabitants will have the chance to taste the fish accompanied by Rioja Alavesa wine. Fruit and vegetable fair, exhibition and sale of Basque handicrafts, rural sports exhibition and games for the children complete the day programme.

 

On October 6th and 7th the Basque Contest of Pyrenean breed cow is scheduled to take place. A wide range of activities are included in the programme, and those who approach Gernika-Lumo, will have the possibility to enjoy exhibitions of cattle equipment, cider stalls, txakoli wine and cheese, livestock contest, auctions, rural world exhibitions, and so on. On Monday, cattle raising equipment will be on display together with performances by "bertsolaris" (Basque verse singers). Throughout the day, the winning animals will be selected and prizes awarded.

 

Last Monday

Without doubt, the most important fair is the one held the last Monday of October. That day, about 900 stalls of different types occupy the streets. Fruit, vegetables, flowers, cheese, txakoli wine and honey contests and exhibitions are some of the attractions, as well as cider, bread, sweets, rosquillas (type of doughnuts) and label quality products.

 

Likewise, those who attend the fair will have the possibility to examine how Basque artisan products are made, and the way bertsolaris and street bands complete the day. Jai alai matches, bat games and a variety of Basque pelota game are included in the programme. The good atmosphere and the fiesta are the undisputed characters of the day.
