Cultural Heritage

The beautiful Arteaga castle, located in a privileged spot in the heart of Urdaibai biosphere reserve, forms a spectacular limestone and marble Neo-gothic tower.

Despite the fact that it has maintained its location since the 13th century, its present structure was designed by French architects Couverchef and Ancelet, who built it again by order of French emperor and empress Napoleon III and Eugenia de Montijo.

They ordered the tower's restoration in appreciation of the appointment of their son Eugenio Bonaparte, by the General Assembly of Bizkaia. as honour son of Bizkaia Thus, Gautegiz-Arteaga saw the building of a Neo-medieval palace, an awesome Neo-gothic tower inspired in French gothic architecture. We'd like to mention the Neo-gothic style shown in the blind arches and the geminate openings or, likewise, in the inner decoration.

Nowadays Arteaga castle operates in the hotel and catering business and offers the possibility to lodge in any of its excellent rooms and enjoy an unforgettable gastronomic evening in an environment that maintains elegantly its original characteristics.
