The Basilica of San Prudencio in Vitoria-Gasteiz is one of the most spectacular Romanesque buildings in the territory.
This was the main spiritual centre in the Middle Ages and birthplace of San Prudencio de Armentia, bishop of Tarazona and peace arbitrator in Osma.
Between the 9th and 11th centuries the sanctuary was the bishopric's headquarters. However, the present Romanesque building dates back to the 12th century. Its original plan included just one nave with transcept crossing and semi-circular apse. Cut masonry prevails in the building and its windows and columns are of classical style.
The portal keeps traces of its original Romanesque facade. Also worth mentioning are the tympanum of the Lamb and the Saviour (tímpanos del Cordero y el Salvador).
On its patron's saint day, April 28th, there is a religious celebration outside the basilica.
