The hermitage of Santa Catalina

  • The hermitage of Santa Catalina

The hermitage of Santa Catalina

The first records of this church date back to 1539. For centuries this sanctuary has been a non-stop witness to pilgrims going to Santiago de Compostela through the northern way. The hermitage is located in the upper part of the mountain of the same name, on the road that takes to Itziar, to be specific. The surroundings of the hermitage provide beautiful views of the Basque coast and the urban area of Deba. This is an ideal spot for a stroll and enjoy the views. Not that long, religious celebrations were held in the surroundings of the hermitage on San Juan and Santa Catalina days. Nowadays only a mass is celebrated on San Juan day (June 24th).
