Chillida-Leku Museum

The Chillida-Leku Museum houses the largest, most representative body of work by Eduardo Chillida.

Chillida-Leku is a museum founded by the artist who created The comb of the Wind during his lifetime after fifteen years spent restoring and fitting out the Zabalaga farmstead on the outskirts of Hernani, just a short distance from San Sebastián. The sculptor was seeking a home for his work - a "place" (in Basque, leku) - where future generations would be able to discover and experience his art in an unparalleled setting.

Within the building are located works of smaller sizes, such as drawings and even his first chest sculptures. But the real nature is found outdoors, where not only his most beloved sculptures are displayed but also the essence of his work.

This historic building dating from the 16th century is set in 11 hectares of land in which nearly 40 original sculptures by the artist can be seen, highlights among them including Buscando la luz I (Seeking the Light I, 1997) and Lotura XXXII (1998), made in weathering steel, a material strongly redolent of the region's industrial past.

From 2011 to 2019 it has been closed to the general public and could only be visited by prior appointment. In April 2019 it is to reopen its doors after a modernisation process led by the Argentinean architect Luis Laplace, known for his respectful, sustainable restoration and interior design work, closely linked to art in its execution. The architect Jon Essery Chillida, Eduardo Chillida's grandson, and the Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudof took part in the renovation process alongside Laplace.

Collection: Chillida-Leku collection consists of 391 sculptures and over 300 paper works such as gravitations, carvings and drawings.

Permanent exhibitions: Sculptures and other works by Eduardo Chillida made of steel-iron, alabaster, stainless steel, stone, concrete, wood, paper, earth, flint and felt.
