Igartubeiti Farmhouse Museum

The Igartubeiti farmhouse, acquired by Gipuzkoa Provincial Council in 1992, which carried out a complete restoration of the building, is an exponent of wooden architecture from the 16th and 17th centuries and is a faithful reflection of the Golden Age of the Basque farmhouse.

The farmhouse boasts a fully-functioning lagar (apple press) from the 16th century. Visitors will have the chance to see the lagar, and will be able to enjoy the aroma of pressed apples, grass, drying skins and smoke from the hearth. The tour also invites visitors to come and explore the dimly-lit kitchen and the stables.The wooden floors in the attic creak under our footsteps.

The house is uninhabited, however, and there is no-one here who is able to regale us with stories about what happened here before and after that golden age. The Interpretation Centre plays an important role in allowing us to relive the history of Basque farmhouses over more than one thousand years. By listening to the family and neighbours of Igartubeiti, we discover how the old farmhouses grew and evolved, how their inhabitants lived and worked, their relationships with each other, their beliefs, what they produced, what they ate, what they did for fun and the hardships they faced.

The museum belongs to the Basque network of food and drink museums.
