Romanesque in Alava: Shrine of Nuestra Señora de Estibaliz and Romanesque Interpretation Centre

Shrine of Nuestra Señora de Estíbaliz is one of the most representative buildings of the Middle Ages in the Basque Country, the site where the medieval carving of the patron saint of Álava is kept.

Located in Argandoña, just 10 kilometers from Vitoria-Gasteiz, this jewel of Basque Romanesque architecture is a mid-17th-century construction with late Gothic elements. It has a Latin cross plan divided into three naves and the head of three apses.

The modern Romanesque Interpretation Centre in Alava is located near the Shrine which, through its 4 rooms, shows in an organized and didactic way the characteristics of the Romanesque style and its presence in the Historical Territory of Alava.

In the first room the particularities of this artistic style born in medieval Europe are revealed, the second room shows the peculiarities of the Romanesque Alaves, the third takes into account the orography of the territory and the diffusion of this art through it and finally the fourth room focuses exclusively on the Shrine of Nuestra Señora de Estíbaliz, a jewel of the Romanesque style of Alaves and the Basque Country in general.

The site, surrounded by forest where the Shrine and the Interpretation Centre are located, is an excellent starting point to get to know the Romanesque routes in Alava and has a car park, children´s playgrounds, picnic area, pelota court and bar with a terrace.

The visit to the Centre is included in the guided tour that can be booked privately by contacting Álava Medieval.
