The Coastal Route which runs along the Guipuzcoan seaboard until going deeper into Biscaya's western borders, is one of the oldest pilgrimage routes to Compostela, even older than other more well known itineraries. On this route, the Basque country fishing and agricultural regions, as well as urban and rural areas coexist. On the first stretch it crosses the Guipuzcoan coast, from the Bidasoa estuary to the border with Biscaya, characterised by very uneven, steep terrain. These rough areas disappear as soon as we travel further into Biscaya across Markina-Xemein and we get to know the Biscayan corners of Lea-Artibai and Busturialdea until we reach the charming landscapes of the Encartaciones.
