Basque museums: excellent visitor numbers

2018 proved to be a great year for Basque museums, which closed the year with figures that are among their best ever for visitor numbers

Among the sites that have released their figures, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao stands out, attracting 1.22 million visitors, its third best result ever, beaten only by the years it opened and its twentieth anniversary.

After the Guggenheim comes Donostia / San Sebastián Aquarium, cementing its position as the most visited museum in Gipuzkoa province and number two in the Basque Country by attracting over 340,000 visitors over the year, its best result since the year 2000.

Likewise, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum ended the year with 252,000 visitors, the fourth best figure in its history. This placed the museum on target for its 2019/2022 strategic plan, which aims to reach ongoing figures of 300,000 visitors a year.

Other exhibition venues that continue to grow are the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum with 52,000 visitors, the Basque shipyard museum in Albaola which has recorded a total of 200,000 visits since it opened and Artium, which had 96,000 visits in 2018, 1.5% up on 2017.
