The Basque Country, the first autonomous region to join the Club de Ecoturismo de España

Meanwhile, Urdaibai begins the process of signing up to the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism

The Basque Country is the first autonomous region to join the Club de Ecoturismo de España [Spanish ecotourism club].  Set up in 2010, this is an important pioneering initiative aiming at local development, conservation of protected species, distribution of tourists throughout the region and de-seasonalisation of tourism.

At the 2nd Foro de Ecoturismo de Euskadi [Basque ecotourism forum] held in Vitoria-Gasteiz on 31st January and 1st February, Maider Etxebarria, the Basque government director of tourism, stressed the value of the cooperation agreement and the importance of ecotourism because of their "very many advantages" for the region, the local economy and the environment.

Meanwhile, the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve has begun the process to become one of the 168 protected areas affiliated to the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in 20 countries. This step will make it possible to foster planned, regulated and ordered tourism based on the principles of ecotourism. Moreover, it will help Urdaibai to become a better-known holiday destination at international level.
