Discover Basque Country
The Guggenheim museum in Bilbao is still just as attractive 18 years on. The summer of 2015 has been the best in history in terms of visitor numbers, recording a total of 317,775 people in July and August, representing a 13% increase on the same season last year. The current overall growth in the number of tourists in the Basque Country is reflected in the number of visitors to the museum, which in itself is a first-rate attraction. The simultaneous exhibitions currently hosted by the museum of two of the top artists of today, Jeff Koons and Jean-Michel Basquiat, represent an opportunity that many tourists probably felt was of special interest, as well as the show Parallax, by Shazia Sikander, which runs until 22nd November. The busiest day this summer was 4th August, with 7,816 visitors. The daily average for visits over July and August was 5,125. The success of the museum, no doubt aided by the spectacular architecture of the building itself, by Frank Gehry, meant that by 31st August the Guggenheim Bilbao had already had 757,595 visitors, 8% up on the same date in 2014 and 17% more than in 2013.
