The Pozalagua caves, star tourist attraction of the Enkarterri area
The Pozalagua caves in Carranza valley, very close to Bilbao, are an exceptional attraction for visitors to the interesting Enkarterri (Las Encartaciones in Spanish)area of the Basque Country.
Named “best tourist spot 2013” by the Repsol guide, the immensity of its labyrinthine galleries and their spectacular contents are attracting more and more visitors, and for this reason the local authorities are backing schemes to meet this growing demand. Carranza town council has prepared a new tourist map showing some of the municipality’s many points of interest, such as the Karpin Abertura park or the Biañez museum-church.

The impressive stalactites of Pozalagua, the only ones of their kind in the world, are nevertheless just one of the host of local attractions and points of interest. The exceptional natural landscape of the area forms the backdrop to an extensive range of cultural attractions, highlights including museums like Enkarterriak Museoa, housed in the historic Casa de Juntas in Avellaneda, the vintage and classic car museum in Galdames, “La Encartada” Basque beret museum and El Pobal ironworks, where visitors can see pre-industrial ways of extracting and forging iron.

Like other parts of the Basque country, in Enkarterri large numbers of places of interest can be reached in just a short distance, including those located in the historic old towns of Balmaseda and Lanestosa.
