Santiago Cathedral

Located in the heart of the old quarter of Bilbao, the Santiago Cathedral is consecrated to Bilbao's official patron saint since 1643.

Built at the end of the 14th century in Gothic style, the current headquarters of the Diocese of Bizkaia has one naves and two aisles, aligned crossing, presbytery stretch, great chapel and, behind, the ambulatory that hosts several chapels. To the North there is a 16th century Gothic cloister with flowers that connects with the exterior through Puerta del Ángel Gate. There, we can see a scallop-shell or Vieira that the pilgrims wear on their way to Santiago (the Road to Santiago). To the South there is a big irregular portico.

The tower, with its pointed spire, is part of the temple's facade, in contact with the vestry. The tower and the portico were built by Severino de Achúcarro and finished in 1887.

After the latest restoration works, the cathedral is open once again.
