Cultural Heritage

Astola auditorium and jail in the town of Abadiño is a square-plan compact building. Built in 1576, the present building is the fruit of restoration works in 1784. It consists of three floors with checker work walls, even if originally they were painted to confer them masonry appearance. Nowadays the stone is visible.

The main façade has a door with three-centred arch shape and a staircase gives access to the first floor. The cabin has four little windows and above it the visitor can see part of the wooden structure, crystal-framed.

Among the many corbels placed at the building's rear, it should be noted that two of them still support the old structure that operated as a lavatory.

The auditorium was the political-administrative headquarters of the Durango's administrative area, where the Lieutenant Judge lived. It operated as a jail, men's block was on the first floor and women's in the cabin. Nowadays this is the headquarters of Gerediaga association.
