Artabene Farmhouse

Artabene is an ordinary type of farmhouse in the valleys of Arratia and Alto Nervión. It was built following the traditional technique in Bizkaia, which consists of building a skeleton of pillars and, later on, filling with walls the spaces between them. The farmhouse was built in two stages: two thirds of the front in the 16th century and the rear part in the beginning of the 19th century. The oldest part of the house is rectangular. Oak posts arise from the floor to the roof and are visible on the main façade. The main façade is divided into three floors, the ground one is built in checker work, the first floor with a complex wooden structure and the last one with mortise and tenon joint-tables. The layout of Artabene, at present, dedicates the ground floor to stables and the two thirds of the front are occupied and the rest is used as a barn. Access to the first floor is gained by means of an outer staircase.
