Cultural Heritage

Bilbao's urban expansion plan, developed in 1876, foresaw a park in this location but it was not untill 1907 that the works began. Architect Ricardo Bastida and engineer Juan de Eguiraun were responsible for the park's layout. The park is named after local benefactress Casilda Iturrizar.

Both designers proposed an eclectic choice of style, combining Romantic and French gardens' styles, and so they mingled straight tree-lined avenues, a circular botanical garden, paths, ponds, and fountains... Other elements were added later: a sports area (basket court...), children's leisure park (swings, carousel...) and a pergola by Juan de Ispizua.

The park has become the most important public leisure area in the city.
