Cultural Heritage

The basilica of Santa María de Uribarri was built in the 16th Century, attached to Arandoño tower, which nowadays is the belfry. The temple was restored in the 17th century. It is located in the old part and does not have a defined style, due to its building stages: the first one Gothic-Renaissance, dating back to 1500, and the other Classicist-Baroque, of the 17th century. The basilica has a spectacular wooden portico, the biggest in Euskadi. With wooden roof structure, eleven pillars, nine pilasters and the temple¿s walls support the portico. The choir dates back to the first building stage, it has a curious roof full of stars, with images of the moon and the sun. The high altar hosts a Renaissance altarpiece, with a Gothic image of the Virgin of Uribarri, Durango's patron saint.
