The Roman settlement of Forua is located on a hillside in Elexalde. It is the most important Roman site in Bizkaia, for its big area and its conservation conditions. It was inhabited between the 1st and the 5th centuries AC.
This site was discovered in 1982 after two Latin inscriptions were unearthed. During all this time, archaeologists have found the remains of a former civilisation. There are nine different Roman structures (most of them are the remains of workshops and metallurgical furnaces) that disclose several periods in the Roman time. Besides, other objects made up of ceramics, iron and glass have been discovered.
The site has a surface of 60,000 square metres and is located in the middle of the Biosphere Reserve of Urdaibai, a key point in the ancient times, because it was useful for the trade exchange in the Cantabrian coast and Aquitaine.
