Cultural Heritage

Berriatua Tower, also known as Sulengua -meaning "prior to fire"- is one of the few buildings surviving to the violent fire that destroyed Mutriku in 1543.

It is believed that the building is the oldest building in town and is considered to be the highest medieval tower-house in Gipuzkoa. It functioned as a watchtower in past times in the port. It is a big tower built in sandstorm masonry with Gothic and Renaissance elements. The building has geminate and ogee windows and, besides, pointed arches. On the other hand, there is an entrance with an interesting geometric decoration.

Nowadays it is a private building.
