The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Mutriku)

The Nuestra Señora de la Asunción church is located in the centre of Mutriku. It has been declared a National Monument of the Basque Autonomous Community, and provides one of the best examples of Gipuzkoa's neoclassical architecture. The building was designed by the Madrid-born architect Silvestre Pérez, but the project was carried forward by Manuel Vicente Laca and Mariano José Lascurain, both of whom were architects from the San Fernando academy and Mutriku natives. The temple has a Greek-cross plan and its exterior was constructed with Ashlar stone, while the interior alternates between walls of exposed masonry and Ashlar columns and arches. The façade of the portico is made up of six Doric columns, upon which the architrave sits. In the interior of the church, in the left chapel, there is a beautiful canvas depicting the figure of Christ on the cross. It was painted by Francisco de Zurbarán.
