After Oñati's incorporation to Gipuzkoa, a plan was arranged to organise its urban structure. This square, which hosts the Town Hall, was included in the plan. In order to carry out the project, architects Mariano José de Lascurain and Antonio Cortazar covered the river and channels merging at this point. Two buildings were erected with arcades. Following the Neoclassical style, a pelota court was included in the square and the perspective was left open facing south. Near the square the visitor will find Lazarraga Palace, which was originally Gothic but was restored and extended throughout the 15th and 16th centuries.
