The hermitage of Larraitz

Art & Culture

Cultural Heritage

The popular hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios de Larraitz is located on the foothills of Mount Txindoki (1,346m), in a privileged spot, for it is situated in one of the main accesses to the Aralar Natural Park.

This building dating back to the 17th century is consecrated to the Virgin Mary and venerates her by means of a Gothic carving in which she holds the baby on her left arm. Seamen and farmers in the area worship the Virgin, as they have always believed the scuplture has miracle powers.

Moreover, many mountaineers begin Txindoki's ascent from this beautiful spot. Besides, in the surroundings of this hermitage there are several restaurants and a picnic spot with benches and tables that are full of people in summertime and at the weekends.

On June 29, Saint Peter's Day, the hermitage holds a large procession in the hermitage.
