Astra. Creation factory

The old Astra de Gernika-Lumo weapons factory will be home to the first culture creation factory in the Basque Country.

The original building, which was constructed in 1916 and subsequently declared a Historical Heritage Site, has been completely remodelled. The new creation is the work of English artist Liam Gillick. Astra aspires to be a multi-functional space and a pioneer in new creations and trends, research and training. The factory has a surface area of more than 2,000 square metres, spread over three floors. At the moment, only the ground and first floors will be opened.

The ground floor will be used to hold exhibitions, screenings, concerts, workshops... There will also be a coffee shop, where cooking courses will be available. On the first floor, there will be a stage for performances and workshops covering everything from theatre, free body expression and dance to yoga and tai-chi. There will also be a rehearsal studio for music groups. There is an air-raid shelter, built during the Civil War, in the close vicinity of the building.
