Parketxe Areatza

This Parketxe, in the square in Areatza, in the Arratia valley in Bizkaia province, houses the Gorbeia nature park visitor centre. Together with the visitor centre in the locality of Sarria in Alava province, this is a place to discover the biggest nature park in the Basque Country.

The centre is in a three-storey building that simulates an ascent to the legendary cross atop Gorbeia. Thus, each floor is related to a different altitude:

  • Ground floor (0-500 m). The subsoil and lowland area: rivers and river banks, the power of water, villages, hay meadows and so on.
  • First floor (500-1000 m). The forest world and its inhabitants. Forestry, geological formations.
  • Second floor (1000-1481 m). Crags and their fantastic shapes, caves and the mountain meadow leading up to the cross.

As well as the exhibition and an educational programme for school groups, Parketxe Areatza organises activities including one-day tourist routes in and around the park, with visits to other museums in the area and a chance to see traditional trades, as well as environmental routes in different parts of the Gorbeia nature park: Ojo de Atxulaur and Superlegor, Arraba and Kargaleku, Saldropo and Paso de Atxuri.
