Basque Country TRAIL STATION

A trail station is an outdoor area equipped with facilities for trail or mountain running. There are marked, homologated trails of varying degrees of difficulty, as well as workshops and short training circuits. Information, showers, gyms etc. can be found at the entrances or reception areas.

The station is suitable for beginners or amateur runners as well as expert runners looking for a place to train and improve or somewhere to hold training days.

The Basque Country Trail Station belongs to the international “Station de Trail” network and consists of 15 trails which run through the Aizkorri-Aratz and Aralar Natural Parks. The station has two main entrances or reception areas, located in Zegama and Abaltzisketa. Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park is accessed via Zegama while Aralar Natural Park is accessed via Abaltzisketa.

The trails run over the entire area of the two Natural Parks and there is a 35km trail which connects the two entrance points. Mountains and mountaineering are very popular in the province of Gipuzkoa and all over the Basque Country. In fact, the area hosts two major international trail running events: the Zegama-Aizkorri marathon and the Ehunmillak ultra mountain race. The growing interest in trail running has encouraged the local communities of Goierri and Tolosaldea to embark on this innovative venture.
