Bars and pintxos area
The Ensanche is Bilbao’s commercial artery, packed with shops and offices, making the mid-morning snack essential for those working there.
This semi-pedestrianised area is one of the liveliest parts of Bilbao and the bars have managed to take advantage of their location to offer real delicacies in miniature in the streets of Gran Vía, Albia, Plaza Circular and Diputación, like the wonderful pintxos at El Globo (Diputación 8) where you mustn’t miss the ones made from liver pâté or spider crab, La Viña del Ensanche (Diputación 10) with its incredible ham and the excellent bar at Lasa (Diputación 3).
Other highlights include the omelette at Periflú(Ledesma 8), the Eme bar (General Concha 5) with its signature “triángulo” snacks, the historic Iruña (Berastegui 5) specialising in slightly spicy meat skewers known as “pinchos morunos” and Izaro (Alameda Urquijo 66), famous for its liver pâté pintxos and its potato omelette.
